Laubin Workshops and Seminars
At Laubin, we take great pride in our instrument-making skills, our knowledge of mechanics, and of acoustics. We want to share that information with you through the following workshops and seminars.
Here are the three that we currently offer:

Reedmaking
Ruthie Garcia, leader
From raw cane to finished reed, Ruthie Garcia guides you in making reeds that are reliable and finessed to your playing style. Ms. Garcia studied oboe and reedmaking with Sherry Sylar, one of the greats in both fields.

Essential Oboe and English Horn Repair
Justin Tan, leader
Mr. Tan is repairer and finisher at A. Laubin LLC. Justin studied with Paul Laubin for four years while a student at Crane School of Music. Mr. Tan will conduct a hands-on workshop where the students will learn how to identify and correct adjustments, how to hold a screwdriver so you don’t damage the instrument, how to break in a new oboe, and more.

Musical Acoustics
Jim Phelan, leader
Mr. Phelan explains in layman’s terms how we use instruments to convert warm, moving air into music. Jim has degrees in both music and engineering and has spent his life designing and building musical instruments. He designed both the famous Burkart flute and piccolo scales. He has given lectures and courses in musical acoustics all over the world including New York, Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Auckland.
These workshops and seminars are free of charge. To reserve a workshop or seminar for your oboe studio, please fill out the following form with available dates. We will do our best to fit you into the schedule.
